Political risk

As one of the first insurers to offer political risk in the private market more than 25 years ago, Hiscox’s political risk cover includes contract frustration, trade credit, and investments insurance for clients ranging from banks to exporters, traders and investors.

Claire Simpson Political and Credit Risk Line Underwriter Tel: +44 (0)20 7448 6617 [email protected]

How long have you worked at Hiscox?

Seventeen years! Previously I was at Brockbank and if I go even further back I was at Ernst and Young.

Why choose insurance as a career?

Do people choose insurance as a career? For most of us it has been a fortuity!

How would you describe your job to a relative?

Insuring companies that build things, buy things and lend money in far flung territories in case they don’t get paid or receive their goods.

Your favourite/worst work task

Favourite: closing deals and developing new clients. Worst: paperwork – process can kill the fun.

How do you like to relax?

Travelling the world with my family (five weeks a year), planning and saving for travel (47 weeks a year).

Who would play you in a film about your life?

I’m not sure there are any women tall enough to play me – does that mean I have to choose a man?

How do you think the London Market needs to change to remain competitive?
Isn’t that giving the family secrets away? I think we need to find new clients and be able to service them on a real-time basis – be that with improved technology, or offices overseas, or different sorts of paper.

Victoria Padfield Political Risk and Credit Underwriter Tel: +44 (0)20 7448 6702 [email protected]

How long have you worked at Hiscox?

Since 1987.

Why choose insurance as a career?

There are many roles within the business to suit everyone.

How would you describe your job to a relative?

If a government doesn’t pay for its goods, we pay!

Jennifer Aniston but I think it would more likely be Jennifer Saunders.

Why choose insurance as a career?

It is a great working environment, but initially I didn’t choose insurance. I was originally a professional engineer in the oil industry, followed by 12 years in resources banking credit as a risk manager/analyst.

How would you describe your job to a relative?

I examine the risk on trade-related transactions the Political Risk team may wish to underwrite. Essentially those are: how and whether the transaction will repay on time, and what security we can rely upon should the company run into problems.

Your favourite/worst work task?

Favourite: distilling complex issues to determine a course of action. Worst: anything mundane and repetitive.

How do you like to relax?

Golf – it is good exercise, you’re out in the fresh air, and it takes your mind off everything else. A bad day on the golf course is better than a good day anywhere else!

I would need someone who could match my dancing excellence so perhaps Brendan Cole from Strictly Come Dancing.

How do you think the London Market needs to change to remain competitive?
It needs to show greater adaptability to capture future growth from emerging markets, rather than resting on its laurels. Just because London is currently the undisputed global hub of commercial insurance doesn’t mean that it will be in 10, 15, 20 years’ time.
