Taming the elements

By:

Earth, water, air and fire are usually best left outdoors. But on the 13 November 2025, Hiscox Elements brought them into the Underwriting Room at Lloyd’s in an interactive and immersive exploration of the four classical elements, and how the insurance industry has evolved and innovated to manage the risks associated with them.

From earthquakes to wildfires

With four zones, each representing one of the elements, brokers were invited to find out how insurance has evolved to help deal with elemental risks like earthquakes, floods, hurricanes and wildfires, while also enabling businesses and organisations to take advantage of the growth opportunities the elements offer, such as the development and expansion of wind power generation.

A key theme explored was how the impact of the elements is changing. Take flood for example where shifting weather patterns are bringing extreme flood conditions to areas where historically flood has rarely been a problem. Conversely, drought conditions are creating the conditions for a higher frequency and severity of wildfires.

Mitigate risk

Insurance helps individuals, businesses, organisations and even governments both manage these risks and build greater resilience. But as the risk profile of the elements shifts so does the insurance response from simply a payer of claims to that of a true partner in risk mitigation.
